At that age, I don't even have the courage or independent set of thoughts to speak. I always blamed it on the way I was brought up. Sad but true, singapore kids are all spoon-fed since they were little. There weren't much chance for them to develop in the area of creative thinking. Excelling academically is not the priority after all, but they just don't get it.
