Mamelis

Mamelis a small hamlet in South Limburg. The hamlet consists of a number of houses, farms, and - located on a hill - the abbey St. Benedictusberg with behind it the Kolmonderbosch.

Although the earliest known mentions of Mamelis date back to the 13th century, local historians do not rule out that Mamelis maybe even older.

However, the first official mention of the settlement can only be found in a text from 1243. Incidentally, it appears from that source that there was already a mill in Mamelines at that time. In 1392 sources mention for the first time about a court “Maemlois”. The name of the settlement is probably derived from the word “Mamilliacas”, or “settlement belonging to the person Mamilo”. Over the centuries the name changed to Mamelis today.

By establishing farms along the old road from Maastricht to Aachen, the current hamlet was created, which was divided in two by a new road in 1825. In 1840 Mamelis had 15 houses and 128 inhabitants. Today the hamlet has about 80 inhabitants.
