Locked In

Went through to Glasgow to see L acting in a play at the Scottish Youth Theatre in the Merchant City. She went through in the morning for a last day of rehearsal before the show, but I didn't got through until the afternoon. Met my friend and fellow photographer M for a drink and a chat beforehand. It was very nice to see her, have a bit of a catch up and hear all about her photography and her plans. She too wants to take portraits but unlike me has done a much better job of finding other photographic work to help pay the bills - quite a lot of images for businesses that sounds to have been pretty lucrative as well as fine art wedding stuff. Talking to her was really quite inspiring!
Afterwards I went round the corner to see the play. It was also on in Edinburgh for one night last summer and is called A Most Curious Detour. It's based on the autobiography of a stroke victim, Stuart Hepburn, and adapted for the stage by our friend A. After his stoke, Stuart suffered from locked-in syndrome as he struggled to communicate with those around him, but now he uses a laptop communication device to expresses his thoughts. It was on the STV news on Friday evening, and although they said Stuart wouldn't be going to see it, as he found re-living the events difficult, he was at the performance, along with his wife. Here is A, who played the role of Stuart, lying in his hospital bed. Taken during the interval, as I wasn't there officially to take photographs.
