After taking last night's blip, I wandered about town and came upon a huge operation of barricades being put up in Albert Square. Found out that the EDL was planning to come through to stage a demonstration today. So.....duh, I had to go.
The UAF (United Against Facism) group was planning to stage a protest against the EDL, and they started off by having a disco dance session in Piccadilly Gardens. A bunch of people dancing around to the Bee Gees while wearing colourful wigs didn't seem like much of a threat, so I went along with them while they were escorted by loads of police to Albert Square.
The police did an amazing job. They divided the square with the EDL heavily contained on one side, the UAF and loathers of bigots on the other, with a massive gap in the middle. So massive, that many the insults hurled towards one another weren't even really heard. They stamped out any potential fights with serious authority. Really, they did awesome.
I got loads of shots, then took a break to get some street riding in. Then went back to the square to see the EDL getting escorted back onto buses to leave. They only got there 2 hours before. 2 hours of accomplishing nothing, and costing the taxpayer a ton of money, just to show the city what a box filled with racists looks like.
So I got to ride my bike in the sunshine and take a bunch of photos of racist thugs. All in all, a good day!
BTW, if you haven't seen Jim'll Paint It yet.......click on the damn thing!
