Over the Horizon

Cheeky weka

Wekas, these funny birds, are ubiquitous on the west coast of the south island. About chicken sized they are native ground foragers that scuttle in and out of the forests. Along the ditches and field margins they are a common site.

A family lives just under our porch in the flax bushes at Gentle Annies. Ever curious and hungry they are not shy about walking right into the kitchen if you leave the door open.

Such cheeky wekas!
