Was the Manuscript Club ! Found this document in an old book. It dates from 1890 and is a list of essay topics for the members to write about.

Topics range from: The comparative importance of gold and iron, The life and character of Milton, Modern travelling, Clouds, Recreation and the Battle Of Hastings. A fairly eclectic list of 24 subjects.

The final sentence says “The Essays of the Members will, from 1890, be limited to 8 instead of 6 pages!

No chance of wine and gossip then!
