Chapel de Kluis

De Kluis consists of a simple house with a small chapel and is actually a one-man monastery. Hermits live and pray in the fairytale-like Kluis for almost 250 years: religious people who choose a life in solitude.

The first hermit

It starts with Father Laurentius Ploumen. He asks the owner, Count Hoen van Carthyls, lord of the nearby castle Schaloen, for permission to settle as a hermit in an old hunting lodge. The count agrees and then has the Vault built.

Sixteen hermits
Fifteen hermits follow after Father Laurentius. The hermits are well-known figures in the area. The population often asks them for advice or a cure. In return, they provide the hermit with food or alms.

On the initiative of the pastor of Schin op Geul, a Kruisweg was built next to the Kluis in 1843. Fourteen stations depict the suffering of Christ and end at a very realistic Holy Sepulcher.
