2255. Technology: Amber 1930’s Clock
My hubby and I bought this clock ages ago and as it wasn’t working we sent it to a clock repairer in Edinburgh in November last year to see if they could get it working again. Sadly they couldn’t repair the original movement so we asked them to replace it with a modern movement so that we could still use it.
It’s a 1930’s East Prussian amber clock, probably a tourist piece and the company were established in 1926 in Konigsberg which is now called Kaliningrad in Russia. Apparently there are still extensive amber mines in that region still being mined today. This company were the largest amber manufacturer in the world and existed until 1945.
When the movement was replaced the clock repairer couldn’t find one of the same size so had to improvise a little by adding the brushed aluminium plate around the outside of the mount. The original clock face was silver but he couldn’t source another silver one of that size. It’s actually a tiny clock measuring only 10cm by 7.5cm but it looks a lot bigger in the photograph!
So here’s a bit of old technology meeting a bit of new technology which we can now use at home. My theme for March is going to be loosely around technology....not necessarily new...but hopefully interesting!
