The Silent People
It was bitter sweet to leave Salla in the morning: the sun shined for the first time during our holiday! Well, it was great weather to drive back home.
We had a break at Käylänkoski rapids in Kitkajoki river, in Kuusamo. We saw many Dippers there!
The next waypoint was in Suomussalmi. Ever since I saw heanku's blip of the Silent People, I wanted to see the installation some day. Now than we drove along National Highway 5, of course we stopped on the spot! In winter the installation is not easily approachable, so I had to settle for taking photos from the road. Nevertheless, it was an impressive sight!
The installation of the almost one thousand strong band has been created by dancer Reijo Kela in 1988. The peat heads are kept in good shape and have their clothing attended to twice a year; their heads come straight from the field, their clothes from organised collections.
We were at home late in the evening.
+0°C, partially sunny
