Rebirth of the cool?
Behind these white boards another Notting Hill landmark is being demolished. In 1984 when I arrived it was a Greek Taverna.
By 1998 and surfing on the waves of 'Cool Brittania', artist Damien Hirst and PR Matthew Freud opened a restaurant bar in the white cube of a building.
Called 'Pharmacy' after Hirst's pill box installations and kitted out appropriately, it was cool for about 10 minutes. I can't find any reference to any of the chefs who worked in the kitchen. This probably tells you all you need to know.
Latterly the site was taken over by Marks and Spencer. After opening it up as a food hall, they recently decamped to the trendier end of the 'Gate', nearer the Tube station.
It'll be interesting to see what follows.
