Enjoying the light

A lovely day, this springlike weather continues. I have been stitching and, whilst delving into my collections of fabrics, bringing back memories, Every piece of fabric seems to have a history. These blue swatches were a result of a workshop that our textile tutor held at her home - out in the wilds near Garrigill. She set up a couple of vats of indigo and we dipped in lots of different fabrics and yarns, some tie dyed in various ways. We experimented with many fabrics and techniques.

The pieces come out of the vat green but, when hung up to dry, they gradually turn blue. I remember the excitement as we watched the washing line and the colours change. To get the deep indigo shade, we would have had to go through the process several times, although some fabrics were darker than others with one go. We were quite happy with what we had and could use in our work.

And here I am many years later using the fabric and remembering as I stitch.
