What is a Marine Fireman?

Not, as you might expect, someone who puts out fires at sea, but rather, the person down in the engine room who stokes the fires. And this beautiful WPA-style entrance to their union is on a street in San Francisco that I have driven down many times, but without noticing it; only when I walked on the block did I see it.
