The couple had lived at the old white house for 47 years when they first heard plans for a high speed rail link which would cut right through their property. They protested that a figure of 8 line with only one station was a dreadful waste of taxpayers money and erected a gigantic sign denanding the plans be stopped. However, the government disagreed and the plans were approved on the basis they would significantly increase capacity on the route. A single tree was planted to offset the carbon.
