The side entrance to Rathen Kirkyard is below the present level of the Kirkyard which will have risen on account of the vast numbers of bodies which have been buried here over the centuries. Burials here include the Great grandparents of Edvard Greig eig whose grandfather emigrated to Norway from Rathen. He was said to have returned by fishing boat twice yearly to attend Communion at Rathen. The late afternoon sun was highlighting the renments of green paint on the gate and the patches of lichen on the gate posts. .
