In search of Kittiwakes
Last time we walked in Bowness we spotted these birds with blotches behind their eyes, went home to identify them and discovered they were kittiwakes in winter plumage. In summer ( without the winter blotch) ) you can find them all round the coast of the UK but in the winter they fly off to Canada or North West England or the western isles of Scotland. ( map on this page).
I thought I had better blip them before they disappear. Luckily there were lots in Bowness Bay this morning .
6km added to my virtual walk took me along General Wade's military road which used Hadrian's Wall as foundations and past a village called Wallhouses. Guess what they made their houses from.
