Alive

I managed to arrange for him to go for a walk with a friend.

Fortunately carers don't count and in any case they seemed happy to walk further ahead than us and managed not to touch each other.

He has said he liked seeing his friend "alive". By which he means "in real life". But I think alive is good too.
