Struggling with Still Life

The theme for this month's U3A photography is still life, and that puts me well outside my comfort zone.  I prefer to take photos of things as they are, not arrange a setting, and I don't have any props or anything like that.  This is just a prototype taken with a compact camera, but I'd appreciate comments from those of you who do know about still life.  Does this count as still life?  Does it work?  How can I make it better?  Thanks.
