Orange spot of death?

Walking in a local copse I first noticed these orange marks a week or so ago. The trees they are marking are Ash, and I assume they are being monitored for Ash die back. One very substantial tree had gone when I walked there today and I wonder if the spot means it stays or goes? So what does the orange cross mean? Too many questions ...
