Camel auction

This morning I heard a lovely radio item about an online camel auction in western Queensland – apparently an Australian first. A family on a station north of Boulia mustered more than 120 camels by helicopter. They were auctioned using an online selling platform that is generally used for selling livestock.

All the camels were sold, fetching $200 to $300 each. Most of them will be used in their new homes for weed control of woody plants like prickly acacia. I would have thought our track record in letting loose pests to eradicate other pests is patchy, to say the least. But no doubt they know what they are doing.

The photos are from two of our caravan trips in the country around Boulia. We encountered quite a few camels.
