A Bowl of Pears

Since these pears arrived on Friday in our fruit and veg box, I have been thinking about doing a still life that includes fruit. This morning I decided to just photograph a bowl containing the pears, and then look at ways to present it. I thought this black and white version captured the nature of the fruit. The pears are very hard and it seems to give them a stone-like appearance. I once read that before refrigeration some types of pears were highly prized because they could be easily stored and would keep for long periods. They can then be cooked and sweetened with a little sugar or honey. I think these will end up being cooked, and maybe used in a crumble. I have also added a more arty interpretation of the same image as an extra photo.
