Hair ice Derelict Sunday 231

Hair ice, a rare type of ice formation, that occurs due to a particular fungus in rotting wood that produces thin strands of ice that look like hair or candy floss.  It is apparently quite rare, requiring specific conditions including moist rotting wood from a broadleaf tree, the presence of moist air and a temperature just below 0 degrees C. Although it is rare, I have seen it on at least six occasions in the past months when we have walked in the glen.  On the other occasions that I've seen it, it has been growing on the branches of trees, but today this largish piece was lying on the ground. Possibly having fallen from a tree.
