1066 and all that
I've always found the defeat of English King Harold by the Norman Duke of Normandy quite annoying. William was descended from the Viking war-lord Rollo who had taken from the French, Normandy. William was a pretty nasty piece of work who slaughtered a great many people and locked England and France together instigating centuries of familial bloodshed and rivalry. This stamp marks 900 years after the event, and has a piece of the Bayeux Tapestry on it, which was not made in Bayeux nor is it a tapestry. Celebrating your own defeat seems to be a bit odd, and I never understood it, unless you look at it from the point of view of the aristocracy, who are mostly descended from the invaders...
