Kirkoswald Castle
Tucked away on a quiet B road to nowhere is the remains of this castle. It is very difficult to see being overgrown by trees, the best time to view is winter. Once quite extensive only a few structures are left including one of the turrets (home to many owls, rooks and scurrying creatures. However the complete moat remains. Originally it would have been built in timber with earth fortifications (12th C) It was destroyed by Robert the Bruce in 1314 then rebuilt in stone in 1317. It fell into disrepair in 1601 and was then filched for any materials of value - lead, stone and timber. A footpath crosses a field right at the side of it and although it is on private land can be relatively easily seen in winter. Particularly atmospheric late evening when the owls are about.
