Alien invasion?

We've been under surveillance for 20 minutes or so, by a loud aircraft with a powerful searchlight. The grandchildren's imaginations have been working overtime, and the wife is frantically checking all the doors are locked. Bound to be a simple explanation - probably just common or garden aliens.
