End of the Penguins

This collage is off Penguins I took photos of but they never got put into a blip.. they are all so lovely I had to include them with my others blips.

It has been a little warmer today with around 23c. I had a some annoying news this morning. I received a call from the Plastic Unit at the hospital.. that is were I am being seen about my finger trouble.. The MRI I had done last week they didn't scan a part that they had specified so have to have another MRI. Last time I waited three months to get one so who know when this may happen. I was going to see the Specialist on the 14th of this month and then I would have found out when they were going to operate on my fingers. Who knows when that will happen now... I am very browned off!.

Design Inspiration
Inspired by Steam Punk, re-purposing, art from junk… Christchurch has seen its fair share of hardships and trouble, but we always emerge from the rubble, stronger than before. ‘Punk It Penguin’ has an armour covered in rustic, patina and re-purposed scraps – incorporating a variety of materials such as spray paints, acrylic and varying materials; ‘foiling’ in golds, metals, bronze – taking a plain piece of plastic and turning it into gold, leather, wood, bone and metal with specific painting techniques, to create the illusion of armour.

The Penguin Bottom is Resilience and he was created by: Zulfirman Syah
Design Inspiration
Resilience is a word that speaks both to the character of Cantabrians, and also the artist’s experience in recovery from the mosque attacks. Zulfirman Syah first arrived in Christchurch from overseas in early 2019. It only took an instant on that afternoon in March to permanently fuse his soul to this place. He reflects, “However broken we might be—as individuals, a community, or a city—we can always piece ourselves together again”. Through a patchwork of colours on a penguin, the artist reflects on the varied chapters in our life, our diversity as individuals, and our emergence from periods of darkness with a new spirit.

Design Inspiration
Reminded of Japanese tropes of depiction of the so-called American ‘black ships’ which forced the nation to open its ports (triggering enormous massive social, cultural and economic upheavals) Henry Turner illustrates the arrival of human vessels in the subantarctic islands and further south in these terms. The changes caused by humanity in these regions are surely orders of magnitude greater than we as humans can imagine at this time. Penguins everywhere are faced with a precipitous changing environment which it seems they shall be fortunate to survive. And for all that, the Southern Ocean is still awe-inspiring for its wildlife.
