Last Friday’s picture recorded how my daily exercise is a short walk around the block.  On weekends we allow our exercise to take us a little further afield.  Today was a longer walk across Cannon Hill Common and onward towards Morden. We stopped on Church Lane.

This is grave in St Mary's Church, Merton.  From the outside it looks like a beautiful church. A religious building has stood here since before the Domesday Book was written. Some of the existing building dates back to 1115.  The graveyard has a mix of all sorts of stones.  It’s uneven, some of the stones look like they may fall at any moment but I found it lovely.

During the lockdowns we have done a number of self-guided local history walks as a way of getting out of the house when there’s no much else to do.  In November, we did a walk based on Nelson’s connection with the area. Today, at this church, we found another link to The Admiral.  Just across the street from the main entrance is a stone known as Nelson’s Steps, supposedly a horse mounting block that was used by Nelson to mount his horse - it’s just not as photogenic as some of the gravestones.
