Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The United Nations General Assembly designated the day as the International Holocaust Rememberance day on Nov. 1, 2005. The date designated for this Holocaust Remembrance Day is no coincidence. On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops liberated the biggest Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau in the then occupied Poland. At that concentration camp, over a million men, women and children were killed in the most barbaric fashion. Remembering victims of the Holocaust and of the Nazi atrocities is of course important, but more important is to try to ensure that the memory of the atrocities is used to help prevent the commission of further mass crimes, genocides and crimes against humanity. I lit my two candles this evening, to remember not only the Holocaust victims, but also to remember the 2 million plus people who have died from Covid-19 around the world in the last year, and unfortunately there will be many more to come.
This morning I continued working on cleaning the kitchen, and putting stuff back under the sink. That cupboard tends to get a bit cluttered, so I did some sorting and throwing out at the same time. The gloomy weather continues, and there was the likelihood of snow showers this afternoon, so for exercise we decided to go for a swim at LA Fitness. I hadn’t been swimming for a couple of months, and it felt good to get back to it, though I took it easy today just doing 36 lengths instead of my usual 50 or even 60 laps!
