“It’s today” says the lady simply, emerging from her home at number 2 Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße, when she sees me taking this photo. Today is Der Holocaust-Gedenktag - Holocaust Memorial Day.
Greifswald, like many German cities, marks some of the homes from which Jewish residents were forcibly removed and subsequently murdered with a small, metal plaques in place of cobblestones, called Stolpersteine - literally “stumblestones“.
They are subtle - arguably too much so - but undeniably dignified and moving.
