D’n geit van Mie d’n Os
This 'Goat van Mie d'n Os' is the Bergse Shrove Tuesday symbol. In Bergen op Zoom they talk about Vastenavend instead of carnival. On the eleventh of the eleventh, Berg's carnival celebrators gather here for the official opening of the Shrove Tuesday season.
The legend of the goat dates back to a few centuries ago. At that time there was a horticulturalist in Bergen op Zoom, called d'n Os Verbiest. His daughter was known as Mie d'n Os. When the soldiers marched past Mie's house, she always danced happily to the music, along with her goat. Until the animal once made an unfortunate dance jump and ended up in the barbed wire. As a result of this goat jump, the Bergen op Zoom song about Mie d'n Os's goat was created tonight. At the end of the last century, the carnival celebrators decided to erect a monument to the goat here on the square.
After evenings full of riots in the Netherlands, there was also a call for riots in my hometown today. Fortunately it still seems quiet now, but during my walk this afternoon, all shops were fitted with wooden panels on the windows, in case things went wrong. So sad ... I keep my fingers crossed ...
