Riding high
The Jane Gifford is a small coastal ship based in Warkworth; the New Zealand Warkworth. Hour long cruises are possible down the Mahurangi River, and then sailing in Kawau Bay .
I had a walk along the bank of the Mahurangi River after doing a small supermarket shop. In doing so I saw eight greylag geese swimming downriver in single file. A Kawau paka (little shag) flew over them on its way upstream, at which the geese burst out with calls. The lead goose emitted a call, and the others responded. For the next few minutes they continued intermittently with what seemed to human (my) ears a sort of chant. The geese then entered a little backwater on the opposite bank, and remained there.
