2016-02-27 (Day 058) The Ross Fountain

I was in Edinburgh this afternoon and went for a wee walk through Princes Street Gardens. There I came across this view of the Ross Fountain and the Castle.

The fountain was bought by Mr Daniel Ross, who saw it at the Great Exhibition of 1862 in London, and liked it so much he brought it home and gifted it to the City. It was sent in 122 pieces, and the scantily clad figures appear to have caused some considerable distress to prominent Edinburgh figures who, I guess, had never been to Paris.

A smaller version of the fountain is visible in Pelotas, Brazil.

These top layers have four female figures depicting Science, Arts, Poetry, and Industry. Above them is anoth female figure, who seems to be suffering some form of wardrobe malfunction.

Sadly the fountain canot be switched on right now as its stonework has suffered from damage (water damage!) over the years. The Council is working on how best to restore the fountain.
