2015-12-14 (Day 348) Bridge Closed!
The Forth Road Bridge is the furthest downstream crossing of the River Forth. At a total length of 2,512m it was the longest suspension bridge in Europe when it was opened in 1964. However, it now operates well beyond its design capacity, and is clearly suffering as a result.
On 4th December, structural faults were found in the bridge that resulted in it being closed within a matter of hours. There is a replacement bridge currently being built, but it is not yet in a state to be opened – so the current bridge is going to be patched to keep it going until the new bridge is ready.
For now, the bridge is closed and is quite eerily quiet… I was able to walk in places I would never normally be able to reach without being run over to take this picture!
