St Margaret's Well, Edinburgh
Margaret of Wessex (c.1045 - 1093) was queen to King Malcolm III and made a saint in 1250. Her feast day is on the 16th of November. She established the first ferry across the Firth of Forth to help pilgrims reach St Andrews.
St Margaret's Well houses one of Holyrood Park's natural springs. The well dates back to the late 15th Century and was relocated from Restalrig in Edinburgh with the stonework design around the well entrance dating back to 1860 (a replica of St Triduana's Well at Restalrig Collegiate Church).
St Margaret's Chapel at Edinburgh Castle is also named after her and is the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh. In 1560, Mary Queen of Scots kept St Margaret's head as a holy relic at the castle which subsequently ended up in France but then went missing during the French Revolution. I wonder who has it now?
