Papering over the cracks

Our village is bypassed by the A1307 and it is notorious for serious accidents and a number of deaths all the way along it.

Does anyone know whether signage such as this actually has an effect? My cynicism generally presumes that the people who ignore safe driving habits in the first place are not going to heed signage such as this. But I’m more than happy to be wrong.

Does anyone Know if there is a benefit or is it just a way of saying “we don’t want / can’t afford to do what’s really needed but here’s something inexpensive to acknowledge the problem in the hope we are not judged too harshly.“
