Belle Isle
There was just time in the morning for a quick misty walk before the heavens opened again. Its fits the bill for Wide Angle Wednesday- thanks Bob.
This is Belle Isle in Lake Windemere and this is what I have found out about it from the internet
- Its the largest island on Windermere
- One mile long. Used to be known as Long Holme- Holme being the old Norse word for island
- The Roman commander at Ambleside, four miles away, built a villa here as a pleasure house.
- During the Civil War it was a Royalist stronghold of the local Philipson family.
- The unusual circular house was started in 1774.
- Seven years later the island was bought on behalf of the heiress Isabella Curwen by her cousin John Christian, who later became her husband and was re-named in Isa"bella"’s honour.
- In Victorian times the island was a great tourist attraction with recommended Windermere viewing stations at either end. But now it is privately owned. Landing is not allowed so we can’t go to the viewing stations.
