Scaliger Railing
Plaque reads: “The Scaliger railing “Verona” 1380. This exact copy was made at Portobello, Midlothian 1890 by James Ross, Blacksmith, along with David Greig, his assistant in the work.”
These railings are in Milton Road East, in front of what is now a care home. They are a copy of railings from the 14th century from outside the ‘House of Scaliger’.
The House of Scaliger ruled Verona and the Veneto (except Venice) for 125 years. A certain Mr Jenner (yes, that one) saw the railings and had them copied. His house, and the railings outside it, are now Category B listed.
