Delph
Discovered in a little sucky hole,
grey-blue, dull-shining, scentless, touchable
Like the earth;s old ointment box, sticky and cool.
From To a Dutch Potter in Ireland by Seamus Heaney - he really has a poem for everything!
An abysmally grey and heavy day. We dragged ourselves around the circuit but it was hard going and pretty uninspiring. The highlight, this rather lovely shard of porcelain. What history was here? In Ireland pottery seems to be known under the general term of delph or delft, referring I guess to the beautiful blue and white Dutch Delftware. This slipped in my pocket and will also do rather nicely as an out of the box flower Friday entry.
