A very unlikeable bird
A dead noisy miner. Noisy miners are Australian natives and are protected in NSW. Their numbers are increasing. Which is a pity, because they are really unlikeable birds. They’re highly aggressive and they’re bullies and they threaten smaller, less aggressive birds, hence reducing diversity in bird populations. They swoop at you if you invade their territory, not just at nesting time but all year round. They operate in gangs: when we had miners nesting near our clothes line, their friends and relations would line up on the nearby gutter and yell at us every time we took the washing out.
They are at their most irritating at the moment, as they keep up a monotonous, insistent one-note chirp for hours. I’ve been told that it is the young birds that chirp, so that their parents and their extended family are reminded to feed them.
I’m really not sorry this one is gone.
