I used to stand on the platform at Sevenoaks Station during my years at the Times newspaper oblivious to everything apart from what piece of death destruction or spin would make a front page picture, I'd look around and see the other commuters wired into phones checking, emails, talking loudly as the flicked through the pages of their newspapers, eyes vacant as the stress of the day rears up to greet them.

I always loved the way the other platform only ever had one or two people on it - the final destination is the seaside, Hastings, Ramsgate or Sandwich.

I always thought one day all the commuters should - en masse - switch to platform 3 and go to the beach rather than the office, I bet they would be smiling then!
