Ciao Roma
An early start on the road (flight path) to Rome and it was an icy blast goodbye as we made our way to the aeroplane. Fantastic views of the Alps, at least that's what I think they were, and a rather pleasant flight across.
Rome's airport was just massive, and after being greeted by a surly Italian passport control officer we made the bus journey to our hotel. It was like the wacky races, it seems there are no rules to driving in Rome, drift between lanes, cut up other road users; don't worry about traffic lights or zebra crossings. To top it all, the bus driver couldn't even find our way to the hotel. Lol!
So the first landmark to tick off the list was the Coliseum, and if I read it correctly it only took 6 months to build, which, given the technology and materials they had available is staggering. The scale of it is something else and my photos do not do it justice at all, it must have been a mind-blowing experience to see and hear the atmosphere around it when it was in its prime.
Sadly it shut at 4pm so we missed a chance of looking inside, we need to return.
