Anzac Bridge

Picturemull has invited us to respond to a photo of a bridge blipped in 2016. It has an interesting construction with lots of transparent elements which would allow anyone on the bridge to view unhindered the surrounding land. It also provides the bridge, a heavy structure, with lightness.

Staying with the bridge theme, I have posted a photo of the Anzac Bridge. Opened in 1995, it is a cable-stayed bridge across Johnstons Bay and links the CBD with western areas of Sydney. Early criticism of the Anzac Bridge was that it's too big for the area, but like Picturemull's Bridge, the cable construction allows one to see beyond it and gives the concrete and steel a lightness.

My photo also shows the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Opened in 1932, the arch is steel and the pylons are granite faced concrete.

The extra shows the whole Anzac Bridge, Harbour Bridge and the visible-from-anywhere Crown Casino tower.

Then there's the metaphorical meaning of a bridge - something that: connects people, rather than divides them; provides access, not confinement; expands our horizons rather than stifles them - a meaning particularly relevant after events of last week in Washington DC.
