A Samaritan Deed

I heard the sound of a bird hitting the screen on the patio door. I looked out to see a female Downy Woodpecker with partly splayed feathers sprawled on the deck. I watched the bird for a few minutes and when she hadn't moved I decided to investigate. I grabbed some gloves and headed outside. Just as I neared the bird, a Sharp-shinned Hawk landed on the deck railing a few feet from the downed bird.

I scooped her up and showed her to Bella who wanted to touch the bird. Together we put the little Downy in a sheltered spot we could observe from inside the house. The bird seemed OK, and we went inside. After watching for a few more minutes, the bird still hadn't flown away. Again I approached the bird and found it very easy to pick her up. I put her in a box with a bit of suet and a warm rag. I set the bird in the garage for about twenty minutes. When I went in to check on her, I could hear scrabbling sounds. I took the box outside and opened the lid and the little bird lit out for a nearby tree.

Bella is 3 years old today! Tempus fugit. We celebrated quietly, with three truffles each sporting a lit candle. (See extra photo)

Between celebrating this evening we watched the unbelievable news of the insurrection of Tump's devotees and the storming of the US Capitol. January 20 can't come soon enough. There are rumors of invoking the 25th Amendment which would allow the cabinet to remove Trump and put Pence in his place for the next couple of weeks.

Again, thank you for your recent comments, stars, and faves. I appreciate your comments and for taking the time to check out my journal.
