I built this, and I am well chuffed with it. Each of the stars has a Raspberry Pi Zero computer behind it, running all the patterns.

The power and range of technology available to hobbyists nowadays is quite simply astonishing. The Pi Zero is a full computer, with I/O ports, Wifi, HDMI output, USB..... all for about £5. My plan for next year is to get all the stars talking to each other so they do co-ordinated patterns. At the moment, they're all running the same code but are not aware of each other.

I wonder how many kids are into this stuff though. I would have given a kidney to have had access to this stuff when I was a kid. But perhaps nowadays, tech is so embedded in our society and our psyches, that we don't even see the absolute miracle that it is - or see what fun we can have messing around with it!
