Happy New Year!
We ended this long year with a drive over the St. Johns Bridge in Portland, and south. It's something we do practically every year. We visit the cemetery where my parents and youngest sister are buried. It's on a hilltop just south of Monmouth, OR, near Salem, with a beautiful and peaceful view of farmland, woods, and the coast range. Then we visit Eric's brother and wife who live in a very old and lovely house in the country near Turner, OR. His birthday is on the 28th and he usually has a party that becomes a big family gathering. But not this year. Think of that: we don't have to give any explanation, all we have to say is, 'but not this year," and we all understand why.
Another part of our annual trek is the two ferry rides across the Willamette River. First we cross from east to west on the Wheatland Ferry near Salem, then cross back to the east side on the Buena Vista Ferry farther south. The short crossings cost a couple of dollars, but are a real treat because the river is high and very fast moving.
May all your crossings be safe and successful.
