Ness Farm Wind Pump

A full day of meter reading work. Grey and overcast but finding this old wind pump was the highlight of the day.

It's in a poor state now but apparently had been restored and was in working order in the 1980s. It's an example of a pre-war pump manufactured by Climax of Horsham, Surrey.

It was originally installed in the early '40s by the army at Greaves, Holm and used to supply water to a large army supply depot there.

At the beginning of the 1950s it was dismantled and moved here to Ness to replace a hand pump.

Very few wind pumps survive in Orkney. When settlements were connected to the mains water supply these structures were probably dismantled and the parts put to other uses.
