At Fountains Abbey, the Serpentine Tunnel is a winding and completely ' dark tunnel, rising up from the river to High Ride. The tunnel was intended to give guests to Studley Royal a shiver as they passed through darkness, and delight as they emerged into the light, to glorious views.

Whilst there is so much darkness around there is light. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot put it out.
