This is in Commercial Arcade which was created by two Jersey brothers called Le Boutillier. They had to excavate all the granite behind the High Street shops which was then deposited where the bus terminus now is. But they ran out of money before adding the glass roof. They later went off to America and made a fortune.
It wasn’t until I heard that story a couple of years ago that I realised that arcades normally have glass roofs. I’m very pleased that these guys ran out of money because I much prefer not to have the roof and therefore an indoor shopping centre...
