Waiting on Storm Bella
A very lazy morning and then we did a quick and breezy yomp around the circuit. A weather warning now in place until 4am as storm Bella passes overhead.
St Stephen's Day here or Lá an Dreoilín, Day of the Wren. Sadly nothing will be happening this year but this is what usually goes on in Dingle. It's ancient, it's complicated but mainly the wee wren was once hunted because
a) it flapped its wings and told the soldier where St Stephen was hiding, leading to his martyrdom
b) it drummed its wings and allerted Cromwell's soldiers to an approaching Irish army
c) it was punishment for an Irish goddess, Cliodhna, who lured men to a watery grave, once a year she had to be turned into a wren and hunted!
You will be glad to hear that wrens are no longer hunted but there is often a knees up and an excuse to dress up in weird and wonderful costumes, often made of straw. Next year.
