Banks Peninsula Penguin Trail

I stopped at Little River to look for 'Gateway to the Peninsula'. I found him on the green beside the road. There was light rain at Little River and really cold.

When I arrived in Akaroa the sun was out and it was much warmer there. I found 'One Fish' looking out to sea.

Design Inspiration
This blue penguin is full of nature, welcoming visitors to Banks Peninsula. Through its golden gates you’ll discover true NZ beauty: native birds, green landscapes, and crisp, clear waters. Frankie Bakker was selected to do the Little River Penguin by winning a competition run by the Little River Wairewa Community Trust.

Design Inspiration
Inspiration for this design came from a conversation the artist had with Averil from Pohatu Penguins, about what they had both witnessed; the artist at sea and Averil with her penguins, they both came to the same conclusion that the sea birds are very hungry. They witnessed that sea birds were eating lots of jellyfish because their food sources had become scarce, in the case of the penguins, blue cod, which is why there is one in this design, and the penguin is largely covered in jellyfish and the odd squid. At sea, artist Katrina had been astonished with the bioluminescence and wanted to include this in her design to illuminate the penguin at night.

All About the Penguins
Wild in Art is bringing a second sculpture trail to Christchurch on 29 November 2020. In partnership with Presenting Partner, Harcourts and with the support of many other sponsors and funders, Pop Up Penguins will give residents and visitors a fresh opportunity to discover and delight in all that makes Ōtautahi special.

The public art trail will include 50 large penguin sculptures, sponsored by companies and decorated by established and emerging artists, along with 65 little penguins, decorated by schools as part of the Pop Up Penguins Learning Programme.

All decorated penguins will be displayed across Christchurch on a public art trail that will celebrate all the unique parts of our city. The penguins will highlight themes like climate change, community, Antarctica, creativity, innovation and exploration.

After nine weeks, out and about in Christchurch, the street sized penguins will be auctioned to raise money for Cholmondeley Children’s Centre.
