THE LIGHT SHINES IN THE DARKNESS...
…and the darkness can never extinguish it. John 1:5 NLT
On a very wet day, when we have had rain of biblical proportions, and when, for many, our world seems to have turned upside down it is good to remember that when a light shines, the darkness can never overcome it.
I realise that it’s not only the Church that has spread light, hope and happiness in these past few months, but also countless people and organisations, who may have no religious background, who have truly “gone the extra mile” and been the light and hope for many who are suffering - the lonely, the vulnerable or perhaps those who cannot fend for themselves. It has been heartening to watch the television news to see this happening all over the UK and indeed, the world.
These are difficult and challenging times for everyone, not only in the UK but all over the world, as this virus wreaks havoc, but as Christians, and especially as Christmas approaches, we believe that the Light of the World, Jesus, came into the world to lighten our darkness.
For many of us, Christmas 2020 will not be what we wanted it to be but perhaps when all the decorations and fripperies are stripped back, we will realise the true meaning of this season - the love we have for one another - and that cannot be bought or even wrapped up as a gift. One thing I am sure of is that when we can meet up again with no restrictions, there will be so many hugs exchanged!
So Christmas is not cancelled - as I have said before, Mr. HCB and I will still celebrate the birth of Christ, knowing that millions will be doing the same all over the world and we will endeavour to be light to those around us.
One of my favourite songs is The Candle Song, written by Graham Kendrick and sung here by the congregation of Derby Cathedral. Enjoy.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness;
only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate;
only love can do that.”
Martin Luther King Jr
